Christology in Historical Context

March 20, Week 10: Incarnation II (Culture & Faith)

So many Jesuses, so little time!

This week is a great continuation of some of the conversations we’ve been having in class–certainly during our Black Christ week but also with your cultural Jesus presentations. I am excited to see where our conversation leads.

You have three assigned readings plus one choose-your-own adventure reading. In class, we will spend some time learning from these different contexts (some of which you may identify with personally/communally).

The first text is from Chung Hyun Kyung who is a Korean feminist scholar. This is from her lovely and foundational book, Struggle to Be the Sun Again.

Then you’ll read Asis’s chapter on a Filipino Christology, which nicely picks up where we left off with Barth and Cone. He asks, “Are our current Jesus images merely projections of our deep desire to fashion him in our own image? (1)”

Finally, you’ll read George “Tink” Tinker’s piece. (Originally a presentation at the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians meeting in 1996. You can view the whole issue of the journal here! 🤯)

Note: the use of “First World” and “Third World” have become, for lack of a better word, passé. One-Third world and Two-Thirds world better describes reality: those we in the west have called “third world” actually encompasses more peoples and cultures than those in the so-called “first world.”

Then, pick one of the below three pieces to read based on your interest–not page count. 😉 As you probably guessed, you’ll want to be prepared to teach your classmates about the reading you picked.

For a perspective on Buddhist and Muslim Christologies, read Schmidt-Leukel:

For a Mormon Christology, read Bowman:

And finally, for a Hindu Christology, read Schouten:
